What is Courage to Lead?
Courage to Lead© is carefully designed to help leaders move beyond the “what” and “how” questions of leadership to the “who” questions. It is rooted in the belief that effective leadership flows from the identity and integrity of the person. Participants are invited to reflect on questions like, “How can I maintain a strong connection between who I am and what I do?” “What can I do to remain authentically myself while engaged in leadership activities?” “When pulled into so many directions that I feel dis-membered, what can I do to re-member myself and show up as a whole person in my leadership role?”Developed by Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal, Courage to Lead provides individuals across diverse professions opportunities to focus on ways to deepen the connection between their lives and work.
Each Courage to Lead experience, from a one-day workshops to a series of retreats, provides participants with opportunities for guided self-reflection, journaling, small group sharing, and large group discussion, commonly utilizing poetry, literature, or wisdom texts as entries to topics. Sessions often follow seasonal themes and allow individuals to listen to themselves while also benefiting from the insights and life experiences of other participants.
Courage practices foster inner discernment and help individuals cope with the paradox of building discrete competencies while sustaining personal wholeness. Courage to Lead brings together collegial communities that support leaders in responding and adapting to the complex and changing challenges of leadership.
